How to split a group trip without a spreadsheet

The trip is the easy part. The money afterwards is where group trips get tense. A little structure before you leave makes the settle up painless.

Decide what is shared before you go

Shared costs are the things everyone benefits from, like the place you stay, a rental car, groceries, and gas. Personal costs are the things only one person wants, like a spa day or an extra drink. Agree on the split for shared costs and let the rest stay personal.

Let one person front the big bookings

It is simpler when one person puts the stay and the car on a card and everyone else pays them back. Pick the person with the best card or the most flexibility, and thank them well.

Log costs as they happen

Do not wait until the last night to reconstruct the week from receipts. Add each shared cost when it happens, with a short note and who paid. Memories are worst right when you need them most.

Handle the uneven cases on purpose

Someone arrives a day late, someone skips the boat day, someone brings the groceries. Split each cost among the people who were actually part of it. It is more fair, and it avoids the mental math at the end.

Settle once, on a date you set

Pick a day, a week after you get home works well, and settle everything at once. Splice does the math and charges each person their share from a saved card. Everyone sees their exact amount first and has a window to pause before anything is charged.

Keep a short record

Save the final breakdown somewhere everyone can find it. It ends most arguments before they start, and it makes the next trip easier to plan.
